To check absconding status in the UAE, use the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) portal for labour-related cases, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) for Dubai residency visas, and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for visas issued outside Dubai. All three checks are free, available online, and require your passport number, Emirates ID, or Unified Number (UID).

Do this next:

  1. Identify whether your case is labour-related (MOHRE) or immigration-related (GDRFA or ICP)
  2. Open the correct portal and go to the case or status inquiry section
  3. Enter your passport number, Emirates ID, or UID exactly as printed — any mismatch returns a blank result

What Absconding Means in the UAE

Absconding is a formal status in the UAE labour and immigration system that is filed when an employee stops reporting to work without informing their employer, or when a visa holder becomes unreachable to their sponsor.

Two separate types of absconding cases exist in the UAE and they appear on different systems.

Labour absconding is filed by employers through MOHRE when an employee abandons their job without resignation or notice. Residency absconding is filed by sponsors through GDRFA or ICP when a visa holder becomes unreachable during the validity of their visa — this applies to both residence and visit visa holders.

A labour absconding report does not automatically appear on the immigration system, and an immigration absconding report does not automatically appear on the MOHRE labour portal. Checking only one system does not confirm your status is clean across both.

How to Check Absconding Status Through MOHRE

MOHRE holds labour files for all private-sector employees in the UAE. If an employer has filed an absconding report against you, it appears in the MOHRE system under your passport or Emirates ID.

No account or login is required to check your MOHRE absconding status — the portal accepts basic identification data and returns a result immediately.

  1. Visit the MOHRE website and navigate to Smart Services or call the Center
  2. Select the Labour Complaint or Case Inquiry section
  3. Enter your passport number, country of birth, and date of birth — or your Emirates ID number
  4. Submit and view the result

If MOHRE shows an active labour absconding complaint, the screen will indicate your name is flagged. If the result is blank with no warnings, your labour file is clear.

A blank result does not confirm your immigration file is also clear. Labour and immigration systems are separate and must each be checked independently.

What to do if MOHRE returns “no record found”

A blank result usually means either your file is clean or there is a data mismatch. Re-enter your details using an older passport number if you have changed passports recently. Ensure the name spelling matches exactly what appears on your passport — even a missing letter causes the system to return no results.

How to Check Absconding Status in Dubai via GDRFA

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) manages residency and visa records for Dubai-issued visas. A GDRFA absconding check reveals whether your sponsor or employer has filed a complaint on the residency side.

Via the GDRFA website

  1. Visit the GDRFA Dubai website
  2. Select Violator Follow up
  3. Select Circular about a sponsored person in the administrative list
  4. Enter your Emirates ID, passport number, or UID
  5. Complete verification and view your status

Via the GDRFA Dubai app

  1. Download the GDRFA Dubai app and log in with UAE PASS
  2. Open Status Inquiry
  3. Enter your passport details exactly as printed
  4. The app displays whether your residency file is clear or flagged

When to use this: Use GDRFA if your visa was issued in Dubai by a Dubai-based sponsor or employer. Use ICP if your visa was issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah, or UAQ.

How to Check Absconding Status for Visit Visa Holders

Visit visas do not appear in the MOHRE labour system. Anyone on a tourist visa or entry permit must check their absconding status through the immigration system only — not through MOHRE.

Use ICP (icp.gov.ae) for visit visas issued outside Dubai. Use the GDRFA portal for visit visas issued in Dubai.

You do not need an application number. Your passport number, nationality, and entry type are sufficient. If the portal returns no alerts, your visit record is clean. If a note appears, the sponsor filed a complaint during the visa validity period and the matter must be resolved before applying for any new UAE visa.

How to Check Absconding Status by Emirates ID

Checking via Emirates ID is the fastest method for UAE residents with an active or recently expired Emirates ID card.

Enter your 15-digit Emirates ID number on the MOHRE portal, GDRFA website, or ICP Smart Services portal. Your Emirates ID is directly linked to both your labour file and your immigration record, making it the most reliable identifier for retrieving complete results.

If your Emirates ID card has physically expired, the ID number itself remains valid for portal searches. You use the number — not the physical card — to complete the enquiry.

Common Errors When Checking Absconding Status

Most failed or blank results come from data mismatches rather than a genuine clean record.

The most common cause is an outdated passport number. If you renewed your passport after starting your job or visa, the sponsor or employer may have filed the report using your old passport details. Re-enter the enquiry using your previous passport number if your current details return no result.

Name spelling discrepancies also cause blank results — particularly for names transliterated differently between Arabic and English. Try variations of your name spelling if the exact match returns nothing.

If both the MOHRE and immigration portals return blank results but you suspect an issue exists, a licensed typing centre can access the GDRFA system directly and retrieve the file. This is a paid service but provides confirmation when self-service portals are inconclusive.

Pro Tip: Check your absconding status on all three portals — MOHRE, GDRFA, and ICP — before applying for a new visa, travelling abroad, or starting a new job in the UAE. A case that appears on only one system can block a visa application even if the other two portals show clear. Spending five minutes checking all three prevents complications that take weeks to resolve.

FAQs

What is absconding in the UAE and who does it apply to?

Absconding in the UAE is a formal status filed when an employee stops reporting to work without notice, or when a visa holder becomes unreachable to their sponsor. It applies to both employees and visit visa holders. Labour absconding is filed through MOHRE by employers. Residency absconding is filed through GDRFA or ICP by sponsors. Both types must be checked separately as they appear on different systems.

How do I check absconding status in the UAE for free?

Check your MOHRE labour absconding status at the MOHRE website using your passport number or Emirates ID — no login required. For immigration absconding, check the GDRFA portal for Dubai-issued visas or the ICP portal at icp.gov.ae for all other emirates. All three checks are free and return results immediately when the details entered match the records exactly.

Can absconding in the UAE be removed?

Yes. Labour absconding filed through MOHRE can be removed if the employer withdraws the complaint or if a labour dispute committee rules in the employee’s favour. Residency absconding through GDRFA or ICP requires the sponsor to formally withdraw the report or for the matter to be resolved through the relevant immigration authority. The process and timeline depend on the nature of the case and which authority holds the record.

Does an absconding case block a new UAE visa?

Yes. An active absconding case — whether on MOHRE or the immigration system — typically blocks new visa applications, visa renewals, and in some cases, departure from the UAE. The block remains in place until the case is formally resolved and the record is updated in the relevant system. Checking all three portals before applying for a new visa prevents unexpected rejections at the application stage.

What happens if my absconding status check shows incorrect information?

If the portal shows an absconding case that you believe was filed in error, you must formally dispute it through the issuing authority — MOHRE for labour cases, GDRFA or ICP for immigration cases. A dispute requires a written submission and supporting evidence. The resolution process is handled on a case-by-case basis. Do not ignore an incorrect record — it affects visa processing until it is officially cleared from the system.
